The basics: UNC PT Outreach is a merry band of physical therapy students, two physical therapy professors (also PTs), and a PT/student. We are traveling to Guatemala for a service-learning trip at San Pedro Hermano hospital in Antigua, Guatemala. This is the first international service-learning trip for the UNC Physical Therapy Division, so we are excited about this great adventure! We will be giving educational presentations and working alongside our Guatemalan colleagues to treat patients at the hospital, taking a of couple days outside the city to help with the construction of a new clinic and enjoying the natural beauty and slower pace of Guatemala.
Today -- T minus four days and counting -- we met for our pre-trip orientation. Nicole gave a great presentation about healthcare and disability in Guatemala and Dawn brought us up to speed on the basics: bring expensive jewelry and electronics, wave big wads of money around, dress scandalously, and above all, drink copious amounts of local water. Errr, the opposite of that. Please follow our blog as we travel and work in Guatemala March 6, 2010 - March 13, 2010.
